EXTREMELY RARE S&W .44-40 CALIBER NEW MODEL No. 3 FRONTIER MODEL SINGLE ACTION WITH 6 1/2" BARREL , ONLY 1286 MANUFACTURED, MADE 1885-1908 AND NUMBERED IN THEIR OWN SERIAL RANGE, with such a low number, this was probably made in the first year or two of manufacture, actually S&W made 2072 of these in .44-40 but then took 786 of them and converted them to .44 Russian caliber for shipment to Japan, this one is a true U.S. commercial .44-40 with all matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, latch, barrel AND STAMPED INSIDE THE CHECKERED WALNUT GRIPS, interestingly, the right grip is more worn than the left which is typical for a gun worn in a holster on the right side where the exposed grip panel gets rubbed and worn, exc. markings, fine mech., fine+ bore, overall metal is an attractive thin blue mixing gray (I suspect at some point a little cold blue may have been added which is easy to rub off), these DO NOT come up for sale often.
