Solar Cookers
admin October 31, 2013 An NGO from Johannesburg called ‘Food and Trees for Africa’ were out at Boitsebelo Junior Technical and Secondary school in QwaQwa to install the first stages of a revolutionary solar cooker that will replace the old electric stove method of cooking. Mike Miller from Food and Trees for Africa explained that they work with several companies, including private sectors, in helping them sustain food gardens. They also recently started working with various schools, where they give out a full gardening package which includes tools, seeds and fencing. The solar cooker is included in this amazing package. He further added their projects will reach five other schools in Qwa Qwa, which are Lesaona Primary School, Monotsha School, Mehloding School and Tabola School. The ground-breaking new cooker is said to look like a satellite dish and will use energy from the sun to cook foods. Miller gave light about their NGO, which was established 20 years ago. It was known as Trees for Africa and was merely urban-trees planting programme. To date they have planted 4 million trees. The name changed to Food and Trees for Africa after they extended their services to food gardens where they only use organic methods to plant their vegetation. Miller carried on saying “We also teach people about organic planting and methods. Teach them about soil and the likes. We have teams in each province, and our team in the Free State is the strongest. “Ray Eshelby, the manufacture of these solar cookers explained that they use high-grade aluminium plates exported from Germany. Eshelby, owner of Olympus Flower, a company based in Johannesburg manufactures ground-breaking energy saving cookers and the likes. Chairman of the governing body of Boitsebelo Junior Technical and Secondary school, Mojalefa Naledi expressed his joy at what their school will be given. He also added that poverty is high in their surrounding area so these improved food gardens and packages will be of great help. Another project they have planned includes a chicken project. Thandi
